midgeHump Day Humor: Dr. Seuss Explains Computers
May 31, 2006 on 7:39 am | In Hump Day Humor | 7 Comments

Before we get to this week’s humor, I just wanted to take a moment to remind you about the silent auction that ends today at the OIVAC. You’ll find a plethora of items in the auction including a seat to the June session at VA Training, a copy of my ebook, Making Dollars Out of Cents: 101 Tips for the Frugal Marketer, a 60 minute marketing brainstorming session, and a three month membership to the Virtual Assistant Revolution. So head over there now!

And now…on with your humor…

Dr. Seuss Explains Computers

If a Packet Hits a pocket on a socket on a port, and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort, and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, and the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash, and your data is corrupted ’cause the index doesn’t hash, then the situation’s hopeless and your systems gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house, says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, but your packets want to tunnel on another protocol, that’s repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall, and your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, so your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse, then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, ’cause as sure as I’m a poet, the sucker’s gonna hang!

When the copy of your floppy’s getting sloppy on the disk, and the microcode instructions cause unnecessary risk, then you have to flash your memory and you’ll want to RAM your ROM. Quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your mom.

Automation:  The key to your business success

Happy Memorial Day!

I’m sitting in the middle of no where in West Virginia but due to the automated processes that I’ve set up for my blog, I’m able to still have a post when I’m taking a much deserved long weekend!

The key is figuring out how you can automate some of your processes to free up your time.  This blog post has been loaded in to Word Press for over a week now, along with the blog posts for the next few weeks.  It took an hour of my time and took a weight off my shoulder.

There are many ways that you can automate your business.  Have you found all of them?

What are some of the ways that you automate your business?

Until next time…

midgeDo You Take Your Work on Vacation?
May 26, 2006 on 9:39 am | In Virtual Assistance, On a personal note... | 5 Comments

I came across an interesting article today regarding taking work on vacation. It comes at a very appropriate time for me. Amist handling client issues today, I’ll be packing for my long weekend away in the middle of nowhere.

My boyfriend and I have different views on what a vacation is. He wants to do absolutely nothing. I go crazy if I have absolutely nothing to do. Only once did he make me leave everything behind (computer, cell phone, any business related items). I was fine for a day and then I got bored. I felt like I was coming out of my skin. He made me fish.

I don’t mind the fishing, it’s just that, well, I’m not very good at it and I find it similar to playing the slot machines. I keep throwing my line out there with a worm on it and I keep reeling it in with nothing attached, including the worm that I threw out there. He finds it relaxing; I find it frustrating.

When preparing my list of items to take this weekend to the middle of nowhere, I asked if I was allowed to bring my laptop. It’s not that I WANT to work, but let’s face it. I’m going to be in the middle of nowhere and when I’m surrounded by peace and quiet, I find my writing passion come out. I don’t want to connect to the internet, but I do want to write. I’ve been looking forward to the ability to just sit there and write since we planned this trip.

I’m allowed to take the laptop. :)

It was interesting to read this article and know that I’m not alone in how I feel about cutting myself off from my work. It was stated in this article that checking in at work while on vacation allows people to relax knowing the everything is fine back at the office.

But here’s something that I wasn’t expecting:

More than a third of vacationing Americans check office e-mails, telephone voicemail and respond to all their messages, according to a recent poll.

A mere 2 percent said they were “unreachable” while off work, said the same poll conducted by FPC, a New York-based executive search firm.

Another survey showed Americans spend an average of more than five hours answering e-mails and checking telephone messages on vacations, which are typically less than a week long. That study was conducted a Pennsylvania-based maker of organizational products, Day-Timers, Inc., a unit of ACCO Brands Corp..

Two percent are unreachable! Can you believe that?

Here’s why I think that many do check their email and voice mail while on vacation — how many emails do you get in a day’s time? I dread thinking about the emails that are going to be in my inbox when I return. But here’s how you can combat that.

Hire a VA! With the technology that is out there, it would be simple to have someone log in and check your emails and voicemails periodically while you’re enjoying that much needed vacation. If there is anything that’s urgent, they can alert you. They can clean out the spam, organize all your newsletters and announcements into one folder and leave only the emails that you need to address upon your return. They may even be able to handle some of them without your assistance.

This allows you to completely get away from work.

I’m not going to be checking email this weekend…I’m just going to write and hoping that I have something decent to hand over to the editors upon my return…that and a picture of a fish that I caught!

I’d love to know how you handle business on vacation…leave me a commment and let me know!

Until next time…

Heather

PS. For those of you celebrating the long weekend, have a safe and happy one!
