I remember when my dad first told me that we had email. It was a Prodigy account that he had signed up for and when he sat down my brother and I to show us how to use it he stated, “We have 30 emails per month. After that they cost 25 cents each. Split them and no fighting and don’t go over your 15 each.”

I was careful not to send emails unless I had to. It was not normally a problem because I didn’t know many people who had email at that time and I made good use of the bulletin boards.

But, think about this. How much would your email cost you today if the 25 cents an email rule was still in effect. (I’m talking, sending, not receiving.)

I looked at the amount of emails that I sent yesterday… I sent over 600 emails! (Of course I didn’t have a mailing to my list in there, but still.. that’s an email!) 600 emails at 25 cents each is $150…

I’m glad times are changing and I’m glad that I’ve got Aweber! $20 a month is much better than $150 per mailing!

Memo No. 1:
Effective immediately, the company is adopting Fridays as Casual Day so
that employees may express their diversity.

Memo No. 2:
Spandex and leather micro-miniskirts are not appropriate attire for Casual Day. Neither are string ties, rodeo belt buckles or moccasins.

Memo No. 3:
Casual Day refers to dress only, not attitude. When planning Friday’s
wardrobe, remember image is a key to our success.

Memo No. 4:
A seminar on how to dress for Casual Day will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in the cafeteria. Fashion show to follow. Attendance is mandatory.

Memo No. 5:
As an outgrowth of Friday’s seminar, the Committee On Committee’s has
appointed a 14-member Casual Day Task Force to prepare guidelines for
proper dress.

Memo No. 6:
The Casual Day Task Force has completed a 30-page manual. A copy of
“Relaxing Dress Without Relaxing Company Standards” has been mailed to
each employee. Please review the chapter “You Are What You Wear” and
consult the “home casual” versus “business casual” checklist before
leaving for work each Friday. If you have doubts about the appropriateness of an item of clothing, contact your CDTF representative before 7 a.m. on
Friday.

Memo No. 7:
Because of lack of participation, Casual Day has been discontinued,
effective immediately.

There are days that I sit here and I’m so engrossed in what I’m doing that I lose all track of time.

Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do. I love the drive that I have when I’m “in the zone” but along with that drive comes the difficulty to stop working.

There was a time that I saw the internet going down as a curse. It added pressure. How was I possibly going to get my work done? Who had emailed me? How could I blog?

And then? One day I did see it as a blessing.

Because on that day, there was no choice but to go outside and play. While I was waiting for the kids to get home, I played with the dog. We played fetch, or rather, I played fetch. I have the only labrador retriever who doesn’t retrieve. She likes for me to throw the ball and then she’ll run and get it and drop it making me go and get it.

It was a great day and I wouldn’t have taken the time to enjoy it had my internet not gone down.

One of the best investments I ever made was my laptop. I love my desktop PC and I love my Mac, but I love my laptop more.

It’s not state of the art. It’s a Toshiba and I’ve had more problems with it than I care to share, however, it’s my best friend. I take it with me everywhere.

And do you know what I look for when I travel, anywhere, whether it be across the country or just down the street? Wi-fi.

Why? Because I like to stay connected.

I’ll be honest. My laptop typically stays one of two places. Either right next to my bed or right next to the couch. I love to be able to lounge in bed and work or park myself in front of the TV at night while I clean out the inbox or just chat with friends.

And really? My creativity starts when I walk out of my office and park myself at Panera or Starbucks with my laptop. When I’m away.

I spend all day in my office so it’s nice to have some down time away but still be connected. And when I travel to my parents’ for the holidays? It’s going to stink. I’ll have to plug in in my dad’s office and won’t be able to roam the house. However, I’ll still have access to the my files and my documents, because I’m taking my laptop.
